Flood Hazard Mapping

For facility managers who need to stay on top of day-to-day maintenance and even critical situations, combing planimetric mapping with topographic data helps determine the flow direction of a potential hazardous spill and other potential hazards such as flooding.

NOAA is predicting that sea levels are rising twice as fast as projected when most nuclear plants were built.  After the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident in Japan, U.S. nuclear facilities are now required to update their plans to address potential flooding events.

We recently completed a Nuclear Plant project for a firm that was focused on planning and analysis of potential flood hazards.  The analysis required detailed topographic and orthophotography deliverables.  Acquisition needed to be during leaf off conditions, with no clouds and captured within +/- 2.5 hours of low tide.  Using our Trimble 68i LiDAR mapping system, we captured LiDAR & imagery simultaneously.

Assisting engineering firms and their clients with the geospatial data to assess the safety and analyze severe flooding scenarios and their impact on the community, contact us to learn more.

National Building Safety Month

A Presidential proclamation has declared the month of May National Building Safety Month. During National Building Safety Month, we celebrate all the dedicated professionals who keep our buildings secure, protect our environment and maintain disaster resistant, energy-efficient infrastructure.

Using remote sensing technologies such as Imagery, LiDAR & other geospatial datasets, AXIS is measuring buildings in a single pulse.  Creating point cloud datasets with a wealth of spatial features useful in decision making, AXIS can provide building outlines for example.  These datasets can assist with 3D building reconstruction; analyzing rooftops of appropriate size for solar panel installation and more.

Aerial LiDAR surveys allow for large areas to be covered quickly, resulting in time and cost savings over traditional methods. LiDAR data is easily processed to extract features, create orthoimagery and digital elevation models, to better assess the true risks for your planning & design projects.

Facility Managers can use 3D building models to see the big picture in order to begin construction remodeling, capital improvements, meet legislative mandates and regulations.  From storm water runoff to building accessibility spatial feature datasets can assist in your facility management efforts.

Contact us to discuss your next project requiring 3D building models.

ILMF Recap - the Latest in LiDAR Technology

The annual International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF) was held last month in Denver. This event attracted attendees from over 30 countries and is focused on the latest LiDAR technology.  AXIS attended to learn more about this ever changing & growing industry.  Our goal is to continue providing you with the latest technology and cost effective solutions for your elevation and geospatial data needs.

Some of the latest discussions include:
  • LiDAR has transitioned from mapping grade to engineering grade due to advancement in sensor technologies, cloud densities, accuracies, and data fusion and processing technology.
  • Dr. Dave Maune, Sr. Remote Sensing Project Manager, Dewberry Consultants, LLC, presented an update to ASPRS Accuracy Standards for Digital Elevation Data.  The new standards will clarify the 1990 standards and accuracy thresholds to align with current technologies.
  • ASPRS President, Dr. Michael Hauck, posed the idea should there be a certification for LiDAR professionals.
  • Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) there is now 6 FAA approved test areas within the United States to conduct research.  AXIS is continuing to monitor the feasibility for sUAS mapping.  As sUAS systems continue to evolve, sensors are continuing to decrease in size and weight enabling them to fly on the smaller systems.
  • HD Full Waveform LiDAR data is helpful for Forestry and Urban Mapping applications as it can provide a more in-depth description of ground topography, tree-canopy composition and edges within Urban Areas.
  • FLASH LiDAR / LADAR systems.  These systems have advantages such as:
  1. simpler processing requirements
  2. fewer moving parts
  3. becoming smaller in weight and size enabling them to be used in sUAS platforms
